The Dog Breeders List: Guidelines for Dog & Puppy Buyers
- Thoroughly research the breed(s) you are considering. How much exercise will this dog need? Will you be able to train this puppy? How big will it get? What health issues are prevalent in the breed? Are you ready to make a 13+ year commitment to keep this dog healthy and whole? These are just a few of the many considerations.
- Thoroughly research the breeder(s) you are considering. How long have they been breeding dogs and what breeds? Do they show or otherwise work the dogs (field trials, obedience, agility, etc.)? Do they perform health screens (such as for hip dysplasia, thyroid, etc.)? Do they offer a puppy contract and health guarantees?
- Get references -- who is their veterinarian and some satisfied puppy buyers.
- Visit the breeder/kennel. If you cannot travel there yourself, perhaps someone else can and take photos for you. Is the environment kept clean? Do the dogs seem healthy and happy, and are they part of the family? Do they interact well with visitors? In lieu of actually visiting, you might want to contact the town's animal control and ask whether there have been problems or complaints about this breeder.
- Expect the breeder to ask questions. Responsible breeders are generally quite particular about the evironment they sell their dogs and puppies to.
- Be absoutely sure this person is legitimately selling puppies or dogs as represented before sending any money!
