The Dog Breeders List: Guidelines for Breeders
As a breeder, you undoubtedly are thoroughly familiar with your breed: its needs and temperament, its shortcomings, its potential genetic problems, and how those relate to your lines. But are your customers? Just like we suggest that buyers do research, we recommend you ask questions to ascertain a good match between puppy and buyer. Here are a few:
- What do you know about the breed and its purpose? Why do you want this breed.
- Who will take care of the dog? Is there an adult that will be committed to the care of this dog? A young child cannot be expected to be responsible and consistent. What will the dog be fed?
- Where will the dog be housed? Do you have a fenced yard? How will the dog be exercised?
- Do you have other animals? What are they (species, gender, age)?. If none, have you had dogs (what kind)
- Are you willing to sign a contract, including requirements for spay/neuter (if applicable)
- Get references -- who is their veterinarian, perhaps the breeder of a previous dog, a trainer, or a groomer

"Check overpayment" scams target consumers selling cars or other valuable items through classified ads or online auction sites. Unsuspecting sellers get stuck with a big loss when scammers pass off bogus cashier’s checks, corporate checks, or personal checks. The Federal Trade Commission has issued a new consumer alert, "Check Overpayment Scams: Seller Beware," that explains this scam and offers consumers tips on how to protect themselves and their pocketbooks.
