Dog Breeds: Doing Your Homework, and other Resources
It's easy to fall in love with that cute white fuzzy puppy. Do you know what breed he is? Do you think he would make a good pet?
That sweet little puppy belongs to a group called Livestock Guardians, and in general, they do not make good pets. They are independent thinkers and highly territorial, which can lead to often tragic results if placed in the wrong home.
The point is, not all dogs are the same or have the same needs. The DBL supports responsible breeding and dog ownership, and thoroughly researching a breed's temperament and requirements goes a long way toward providing your new dog with the kind of home he needs.
And please respect a breeder if s/he does not wish to sell a dog to you. Perhaps you just need to upgrade your fencing. Or perhaps you are trying to keep a large, active dog in a two-room, highrise city apartment....
We've listed some links to breeds and kennel clubs and other sites of interest. The list is by no means complete, but it will give you a good starting point. For your convenience, so you don't lose the ad you're interested in, these links open in one new browser window.
